Taxi entrepreneur Jani Kumpulainen from Iisalmi has been named the Taxi Professional of the Year 2021.
In a voting organized by the Taxi Association, he received praise for his professionalism, creativity, and the overall service spirit of his company. Kumpulainen believes that the taxi industry is now on the better side of the pandemic.
Jani Kumpulainen is a third-generation taxi entrepreneur. Before becoming an entrepreneur, he ventured into the electrical field and worked as a driver mainly on weekends while studying. However, he was drawn to the taxi industry and became an entrepreneur in 2010. Currently, the taxi professional is hopeful about the future, although there have been many challenges along the way. Kumpulainen, like the entire taxi industry, had to seriously consider how to survive during the COVID-19 pandemic.
– When transport services ceased, we had to come up with something else. We started grocery deliveries. I did the shopping, and the drivers delivered the goods. Social media and a mention in the local newspaper brought visibility to the service, which helped us receive orders. Restaurant food deliveries, small package transport, and even delivering potting soil to summer cottages were ways we managed to get through the worst, Jani Kumpulainen says
– Now, the situation in the industry is looking brighter, even though we still take it just a few months at a time.
Changed legislation has also presented challenges for taxi entrepreneurs, but it has also brought opportunities. Kumpulainen turned the challenge into an opportunity.
– When my grandfather survived the war and my father the depression, I decided to get through one traffic service law myself, even though I had already started planning to close the business. Instead, I expanded my business. The new law from 2018 allowed for that. I bought the taxi operation from an old entrepreneur, and my company began to grow, Kumpulainen, who now runs a four-car company, explains.
In addition to himself, he employs four regular drivers and five part-timers. The entrepreneur relies heavily on his employees.
– Employees are the company’s greatest asset. The taxi industry is a service sector, and drivers need to be satisfied and proud of their profession. We have an extremely good, close-knit team. However, considering the taxi industry nationwide, mandatory driver training would be beneficial. When an entrepreneur trains, some obvious things might be forgotten without guidance, Jani Kumpulainen reflects.
Honorable Mentions
Honorable mentions in the 2021 competition went to: Tomi Enqvist, Lapinjärvi; Juha Haikonen, Teuva; Petteri Hietanen, Järvenpää; Aki Mertanen, Polvijärvi; Caro Rantala, Vantaa; Risto Salmi, Vihti; and Jarkko Ylläsjärvi, Kolari. The competition was held at the end of last year for the fifth time. It continues the Taxi Driver of the Year competition held in collaboration with the Seura magazine from 1982 to 2008. In both competitions, suggestions have been solicited from taxi customers.
– The vast majority of those working in the taxi industry are customer service professionals with big hearts, and the Taxi Professional of the Year competition is an excellent reminder of that. We received a lot of nominations for friendly, flexible, and caring taxi drivers from all over Finland, says communications expert Elina Ala-Heikkilä from the Taxi Association.
The jury included Kai Andersson, chairman of the Taxi Association; Pasi Hautalahti, senior expert at Traficom; and Anssi Kemppi, executive director of the Pensioners’ Union.

Taxi Service Kumpulainen Oy was awarded Company of the Year at the Iisalmi Entrepreneurs’ festive event.
The company’s owner, Jani Kumpulainen, considered the recognition to be a tremendous honor.
– It’s great. There are many large companies in Iisalmi, so it’s wonderful that a smaller company is also receiving recognition.
The Company of the Year award is the highest honor in Kumpulainen’s career, but he has received praise from his community in recent years.
The Taxi Association honored Kumpulainen as Taxi Professional of the Year. Last year, he was also nominated for the By Iisalmi award.
Kumpulainen emphasizes that the recognition does not belong solely to him; everything achieved has been done together with the entire staff.
– Without them, this would not have been possible. We have an amazing team that makes it great to work together.
A good team spirit among the employees has helped Kumpulainen overcome the challenges encountered along the way. He reflects that overcoming these challenges was the reason for receiving the recognition.
– We have been able to operate alongside the changes.
Kumpulainen mentions three significant challenges in his entrepreneurial career, which began in 2010.
– First was the taxi reform in 2018. It intensified competition because the entire work environment in the taxi industry was revamped. Luckily for Kumpulainen, the taxi reform did not affect a city the size of Iisalmi too much.
Next came the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Because of the pandemic, Kumpulainen had to reduce the number of his vehicles by one and expand his business.
– The most challenging of all the challenges has definitely been the rise in fuel prices.
Kumpulainen says that the price increase affects taxi entrepreneurs’ pricing, which understandably is not pleasant for the entrepreneur either.
However, he remains confident. The company intends to continue with its current model. Currently, the business operates in the Kuopio and Iisalmi regions.
– There will likely be no changes. Maybe someday in the future we might switch to electric cars. But at the moment, they are not useful for us since no electric models are available for taxi operations yet.
Kumpulainen did not start his entrepreneurial journey from scratch. The first Kumpulainen taxi company was established by his grandfather in 1954.
Kumpulainen’s father was also a taxi entrepreneur. However, the taxi industry was not a given for him.
– I went to vocational school for electrical engineering. I did not intend to become a taxi driver, but I was drawn into it when I started driving weekend shifts for my father.
